Description
Trapani School, Sicily, 18th century Madonna and Child Alabaster statuette H. 28 cm. LJ Minor damage and losses; the alabaster base, decorated with acanthus leaves and putti, is badly damaged and in need of restoration. A statue of the Virgin, probably carved in Pisa in the mid-14th century by the workshop of Andrea or Nino Pisano, is venerated in the ‘Fishermen’s Chapel’ of the Convent of the Annunziata in Trapani (western Sicily). It enjoyed extraordinary fame, which led to the production of countless replicas over the centuries in workshops in this city specialising in alabaster carving.
