Description
Valentine REYRE (1889–1943). Portrait of a lady in a black dress. 1909. Oil on canvas, signed and dated; countersigned on the reverse of the stretcher. (Some loss of paint, minor damage.) Height: 130.5 cm; Width: 81 cm. Born in Paris in 1889, Valentine Reyre trained notably under Georges Desvallières (1861–1950) and was part of the circle of Maurice Denis (1870–1943). In 1916, deeply affected by the tragedies of the First World War, she co-founded the L’Arche group alongside the architect Maurice Storez (1875–1959) and the sculptor Henri Charlier (1883–1975). This collective of artists and craftspeople campaigned for a revival of Christian art by advocating a return to the authenticity of materials and the medieval corporative spirit. She continued her commitment by subsequently taking part in the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, established in 1919.
