Description
Valentine REYRE (1889–1943). Bringing in the hay. Oil on canvas, dated ‘10 July 1903’. Titled, dated and numbered “25P” on a label on the stretcher. (Damage and restoration.) Height: 27 cm; Width: 35 cm. Born in Paris in 1889, Valentine Reyre trained notably under Georges Desvallières (1861–1950) and was part of the circle of Maurice Denis (1870–1943). In 1916, deeply affected by the tragedies of the First World War, she co-founded the L’Arche group alongside the architect Maurice Storez (1875–1959) and the sculptor Henri Charlier (1883–1975). This collective of artists and craftspeople campaigned for a revival of Christian art, advocating a return to the sincerity of materials and the medieval spirit of craftsmanship. She continued her commitment by subsequently joining the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, founded in 1919.
