Description
Valentine REYRE (1889–1943). Reconstruction. 1916. Oil on panel, signed on the reverse and numbered ‘247P’. Titled and dated on a label on the reverse. (Tear.) Height: 27 cm; Width: 21 cm. Born in Paris in 1889, Valentine Reyre trained notably under Georges Desvallières (1861–1950) and moved in the circle of Maurice Denis (1870–1943). In 1916, deeply affected by the tragedies of the First World War, she co-founded the L’Arche group alongside the architect Maurice Storez (1875–1959) and the sculptor Henri Charlier (1883–1975). This collective of artists and craftspeople campaigned for a revival of Christian art by advocating a return to the sincerity of materials and the medieval corporative spirit. She continued her commitment by subsequently joining the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, founded in 1919.
