Pol Chambost is an icon of 20th-century French ceramics and a central figure of the 1950s style. Trained in sculpture at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he began his career in the family business, a funeral marble workshop in Ivry-sur-Seine, before devoting himself entirely to ceramics in 1932. After being wounded during the Second World War, he turned his attention to decorative and functional earthenware, championing the combination of ‘the beautiful and the useful’. His work from the 1950s is distinguished by an innovative and timeless style, characterised by fluid, biomorphic and curvilinear forms, often in two colours and playing on contrasts in texture. Distributed in prestigious department stores such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché, or through his long-standing collaboration with Colette Guéden at Primavera, his creations gained international renown, even featuring in the set design of Jacques Tati’s 1958 film *Mon oncle*. An exceptional craftsman, he was the first in France to use a large-capacity electric kiln, enabling mass production that retained a high standard of craftsmanship.
