1. A Mamluk brass bowl
Egypt, 14th/ 15th Century
of rounded form, the sides tapering towards a slightly everted rim, engraved with a series of cartouches filled with inscriptions in thuluth on a ground of split palmettes, interspersed by roundels containing flowerheads and vegetal interlace
33 cm. diam.
Inscriptions: mimma 'umila bi-rasm al-sitt al-jalil[a?] / zamzam bint al-mu'allim 'abd al-wahhab, 'One of what was made for the glorious(?) lady Zamzam bint al-Mu'allim (the teacher) 'Abd al-Wahhab'; la zilta ya maliki ma dumta fi da'a wa inta min kull hamm khali al-bali, 'May you, O my possessor always live in serenity And Your mind be free from all worries'; al-'izz wa al-nasr wa al-iqbal wa al-ni'am wa al-jud wa al-majd, 'Glory and victory and prosperity and grace and generosity and splendour'.
