The images may illustrate the Hamleh-ye Heydari, a well-known epic and religious poem in Persian composed by Muhammad Rafi' Mashhadi, known as Badhil (d. 1711), in the manner of Firdausi's Shahnama. It recounts the life of the Prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali, and the early leaders of Islam from a Shi'a perspective.
One of the paintings may depict a follower of the Prophet or of 'Ali being caught and brought to the enemy, while the other runs away. The second may depict Khadijah (the first wife of the Prophet and the first person to embrace Islam), coming to the Prophet to indicate her embracing of Islam, throwing an opponent of the Prophet from his horse and confronting a ruler while holding a sword.
