Description
96. Two illustrated leaves from a Jain religious manuscript
Rajasthan, mid-19th Century
nagari manuscript on paper written in black and red ink, illustrations in gouache and gold, margins ruled in red
leaves 103 x 245 mm.(2)
The illustrations depict jinas seated in the branches of a tree; and an event from the life of Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara: Mahavira, as a child, was taking part in a game of piggyback when a demon, Sangamaka, appeared in the form of a snake, twining itself round the trunk of a tree, as seen here, and then took the form of a child in order to disrupt the game. Mahavira defeated the demon and rode on his back.
