115. 115W Carte de l'Indostan ou de L'Empire Mogol, d'apres les observations les plus recentes Engraved by Tardieu, Paris, after James Rennell, no date, but 1790s printed with some hand colouring in outline, in four joined sections, mounted on cloth, with hanging bar, rolled 133 x 105 cm. To be sold without reserve James Rennell (1742-1830) was in the employ of the East India Company, and was Surveyor-General of Bengal (1764-77), and of Bihar and Orissa (1767-77). He was later one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1782 he published his first, groundbreaking Map of Hindoostan, which changed contemporary knowledge and the overall conception of India. Our French map is after his English version of 1788.
