WŁODZIMIERZ TERLIKOWSKI (1873–1951) “San Giacomo di Rialto, Venice” Oil on canvas, H. 61 cm × W. 47 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse: “in friendly remembrance of… 7 Sept 1937”. An expressive view of the church of San Giacomo di Rialto, rendered in thick, vigorous brushstrokes using a palette knife, characteristic of the artist’s Post-Impressionist style. A Polish painter born in Poraj in 1873 and trained in Paris at the École de Murol, Włodzimierz Terlikowski established himself as one of the most distinctive figures of the École de Paris, a contemporary of Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Pablo Picasso, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Exhibiting in major European galleries, including Bernheim, he developed a pictorial language drawing on Fauvism and Expressionism, with his palette knife technique having been compared to the works of Paul Cézanne and Auguste Renoir.
