Attributed to ADRIAEN VAN DE VELDE (1636–1672) Pastoral Landscape Oil on canvas. W. 36 cm × H. 30 cm. A pastoral landscape featuring a cow, a horse, goats and shepherds. Re-stretched; some localised restoration and repainting. The cow — the most characteristic element of the artist’s style — remains largely in its original state. Provenance: former French collection. An Amsterdam-based animal and landscape painter, Adriaen van de Velde (1636–1672) is one of the most accomplished masters of 17th-century Dutch painting in the pastoral genre, renowned for the subtlety of his observation of rural life, the accuracy of his lighting and the liveliness of his animals. A very similar pastoral scene — ‘Animals near a Building’ — is held in the collections of the National Gallery in London, attesting to the consistency and quality of this painting within the artist’s body of work.
