Description
DUNHILL, Mid-20th century A pair of 750‰ yellow gold hunting cufflinks set with four Essex crystal cabochons depicting a duck and a pheasant, on the ground and in flight, against a mother-of-pearl background. Signed "DUNHILL-PARIS" and numbered at the point "203-69". French work, hallmarked DUMONT & Cie. Diameter of pattern: 1.4cm. P. Gross weight: 11.5 g. With a DUMONT case. The "Essex Crystal" technique takes its name from William Essex - painter and miniaturist to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert - but it was his pupil, William Bishop Ford, who popularised the technique from the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. Used until the mid-twentieth century, the technique involved applying polychrome pigments to the reverse of rock crystal or glass cabochons, which had previously been engraved with animal or floral motifs in intaglio of varying depths. The virtuosity of these pieces lies in the complexity of the painting - in miniature - of motifs of redoubling finesse, starting with the details and ending with the backgrounds, all on a recessed surface. The piece shown here is a perfect illustration of the three-dimensional effect achieved by this technique, as well as the characteristic 'magnifying glass' effect.
