Founded in Madrid in 1854 by Felipe Sanz de Montera y del Valle, the House of Sanz moved to Calle de la Montera and established itself as a renowned jeweller in the Spanish capital at the end of the 19th century, before becoming a supplier to the Casa Real. The Sanz family's work is characterised by imposing volumes, figurative subjects and the use of a variety of coloured stones such as amethyst, labradorite, corundum and turquoise. The Sanz family also made its mark in the world of high court jewellery, notably when Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain commissioned them to make a necklace of seven Colombian emeralds.
Among the other works attributed to the House, a number of brooches featuring animals or ethnographic motifs illustrate the late 19th-century taste for decorative exoticism. The "Native American Head" brooch in this sale is a case in point. The treatment of the face is reminiscent of the attention paid by Sanz jewellers to volume effects and theatrical compositions. Through chromatic contrasts, rich materials and expressive compositions, Sanz developed a singular stylistic language that appealed to 20th-century Spanish customers.
