Alicia Penalba (1913-1982) was an Argentinian artist. She made her debut in Paris at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière and spent most of her career in France. She applied her art to a variety of media, including ceramics, tapestry, sculpture and jewellery. Indeed, she sees no separation between these practices, which she sees as stemming from the same source and responding to the same desire to transform life through a common plastic meaning. Deeply influenced by the landscapes of her childhood in Argentina, she refers to them for the biomorphic forms that make her works unique. Through the use of gold and bronze, Penalba creates vertical forms whose play of light and variations in patina give the whole an impression of movement. This plastic research reinforces the poetic dimension of his sculptural work.
"I see no separation between my sculptures and my jewellery. Everything comes from the same source; the plastic meaning is the same. They respond to the same desire to change life.
