Description
FALIZE FRÈRES
Design sketch for General Dubail’s sword.
Pencil, watercolour, gouache, ink and collages on card stock.
Dimensions: approx. 24 x 31 cm.
Unsigned. On the reverse: dated 25 March 1925, numbered, iconographic annotations.
The commission:
The sword was commissioned for the inauguration of the Museum of the Legion of Honour on 25 March 1925. `
The iconography of the sword symbolically traces the career of General Augustin Dubail (1851–1934), from soldier to Chancellor, from the Saint-Cyr Military Academy to the wars of 1870 and 1914–18.
Appointed Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour in June 1918, he founded the SLH Members’ Mutual Aid Society in 1921 to assist the most destitute recipients, and opened the museum dedicated to the Legion of Honour in 1925.
The sword is currently housed at the Museum of the Legion of Honour and Orders of Chivalry in Paris.
We note that between the design and the sword presented to the General, a few details were altered, such as the medallions—which were originally round but became square—depicting Bonaparte, and the pommel featuring a cockerel at the centre of the composition.
