Pencil, watercolour, gouache, ink on card stock.
Dimensions: approx. 31 x 24 cm.
Unsigned. On the reverse: dated 28 April 1919, numbered, with illustrative annotations.
The commission:
The sword was commissioned by Mr Anghelakis, Mayor of Thessaloniki, as a gift to General Louis Franchet d’Espèrey in honour of his assumption of command-in-chief of the Allied forces in the East and the Allied victory during the September 1918 offensive in the First World War.
Louis Franchet d’Espèrey (1856–1942) was a general and later a Marshal of France, as well as a member of the Académie Française. He distinguished himself notably during the First World War in the Salonika expedition, which led to the surrender of the German-Bulgarian forces.
The sword is currently housed at the Army Museum, Hôtel National des Invalides in Paris.
