The commission:
This sword was probably commissioned for Marshal Hubert Lyautey’s election to the Académie Française in 1912.
Hubert Lyautey (1854–1934) pursued a military career, notably abroad (Hanoi, Madagascar), where he served as a cavalry officer. He then oversaw the establishment of the Moroccan Protectorate and became the country’s first Resident-General. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1912. He was appointed Minister of War during the First World War.
