The commission:
This sword, which was probably never made, was most certainly commissioned for the induction of Frédéric-François Marsal into the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques.
Frédéric-François Marsal (1874–1958), an officer in Indochina and a captain in the army, built his career in the private sector, notably in banking; a specialist in financial matters, he served in Clemenceau’s cabinet before becoming Minister of Finance from March to June 1924.
On 8 June 1924, he was appointed President of the Council. Following his resignation, he turned his attention to the presidency of the colonial lobby from 1927 onwards. The following year, he was elected to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
