ENCOLPION (Pectoral reliquary) Romania, 19th century Double-sided icon, tempera on gilded panel in its silver case stamped with a low hallmark (foreign work, 800 thousandths, illegible hallmarks), depicting Saint Menas, according to Cretan iconography, generally depicted as a Roman on horseback, and the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, soldiers of the XII Fulminata legion from Melitene (Roman Armenia) who refused to renounce their faith during the persecutions of Licinius, who was then in conflict with Constantine I in 320 AD. Both sides of the icon show considerable wear and loss; the original varnish has been removed. No retouching. Good structural condition. The stamped case is in perfect condition (the chain is missing) A fine and rare example of work from Romanian monastic workshops, probably intended for a monk. 6 x 8 cm. Gross weight: 106.7 g.
