Description
TRINITY FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT Northern Greece (Macedonia), 18th century Tempera on panel with a gold and silver background (borders) The three divine hypostases are depicted literally, in contrast to the Old Testament depiction of the Three Angels of Abraham’s Hospitality: the Father, in the guise of the Ancient of Days (Sabaoth), and the Son, Christ Pantokrator, are enthroned upon the cloud. Both are blessing with one hand, whilst the other rests upon the globe surmounted by the cross, the base of which Christ holds firmly; the Book of Scripture (the Incarnate Word) upon their laps; their heads bear the crowns of kings, and their feet rest upon two winged wheels with eyes (Ophanim, Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 1), symbols of divine omniscience, omnipresence and sovereignty. In a slight triangular arrangement, directly beneath the cross, the Holy Spirit, depicted as a dove with outstretched wings within two superimposed squares forming a star, set within a circle—the blazing light of divine creative omnipotence made manifest, the squaring of the circle. Stylistically, the icon blends post-Byzantine and Cretan influences with purely regional elements such as the floral decoration of the borders; the use of gold and silver leaf, as well as the palette of pigments employed, all bear witness to a certain opulence, whilst the linework and modelling reveal a certain rustic quality. Structurally, the icon is in a very good state of preservation; the lower part of the reverse and the excessive oxidation of the original varnish residues indicate exposure to intense heat from a nearby source; the polychrome painting shows signs of wear due to the aggressive and partial removal of the varnish, but there are no losses or retouching. 24.5 x 18.5 cm
