Description
C.J.A. PERRENOUD Cie, Le Locle An 18-carat yellow gold (750) savonnette pocket watch with enamelled decoration on a guilloché background; on the front of the case are the arms of Chile, with, on the right, a huemul crowned with a naval crown, and on the left a condor crowned in the same manner, supporting a star set with old-cut diamonds; and, on the back of the case, the first name "Arturo" surrounded by rose-cut diamonds. Dial, probably in chiselled gold and silver, signed and decorated with floral baskets, seconds at 6 o’clock. Hand-wound mechanical movement, signed on the mainplate and numbered 37179. Mineral glass movement cover. Case numbered 37179. Double 18k gold case, signed and numbered. Late 19th-century work. Gross weight: 76g The coat of arms depicted on the front of the lid is that of Chile. The date 15 October 1881 falls within the period of the War of the Pacific, which pitted Chile against Peru and Bolivia; in October, Chile established an occupation administration in Lima, the capital of Peru, marking the country’s peak in the conflict. The name ‘Arturo’ likely refers to Arturo Prat, a Chilean national hero who distinguished himself during the naval battle of Iquique against the Bolivian navy, in which he sacrificed his life. The combination of the coat of arms and this reference to Arturo is a symbol of patriotism. (Enamel chips, two small diamonds missing, watch not currently in working order, servicing required)
