Inscriptions on a label on the reverse of the stretcher: “De Lorimier d’Étoges (Antoine Charles), born in Paris in 1680, died in Paris on 23 May 1755. / Notary at the Châtelet (Fontana’s practice in 1929) / Councillor to the King / Master of the Chamber of Exchequer / Re-stretched, re-framed and varnished by Leguay in September 1933”
Inscriptions on the reverse of the frame: “Original version of this painting, from which a copy was removed by Maître Emile
Ladan Buckhairy and presumably sold. This painting was repurchased by Emile Ladan-Buckairy from his family (he
had had a copy made of it). It was saved from the general sale of family mementoes by Suzanne and
Jacques Mourichon (?) in December 1953”
