Bibliography: Robert Ariès and Jacques O’Hana, *The Complete Works: Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Mané-Katz*, Volume I, London, Editions d’Art Jacques O’Hana, 1970, no. 103, reproduced on p. 33. Deposited by Myriam Vogel at the Museum of Jewish Art and History, this 1931 oil on canvas is one of Mané-Katz’s masterpieces. Painted on a very large scale—unusual for a Montparnasse artist living in extreme poverty at the time—*La lecture* is an emblematic work by the artist. In this composition, Mané-Katz depicts a group of workers gathered around a Yiddish newspaper, with the same fervour as a gathering of rabbis around the Talmud. It is a scene imbued with spirituality and power, enhanced by the red and ochre colour palette and the intensity of the figures.
