[HISTORICAL POSTER]
An extremely rare poster in Hebrew, printed to mark the restoration of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

This psalm of praise to the Lord was composed by Rabbi Menahem Noveira (1717–1777) and recited at the synagogue in Mantua in honour of the recovery of Empress
Maria Theresa of Austria (the city of Mantua was then under Austrian rule). Maria Theresa had contracted smallpox and, defying the doctors’ prognosis, made a full recovery within a few weeks, unlike her daughter-in-law, who died of the disease. To celebrate her recovery, commemorative medals were struck and Masses of thanksgiving and services in the synagogues were organised. Having lost four of her children, Maria Theresa introduced variolation – the precursor to modern vaccination – into Austria, and had it administered to her remaining children.
