Napoleon the Great reinstated the Jewish religion on 30 May 1806.
Famous early 19th-century print engraved by Couché fils (1782–1849), unsigned, in a contemporary print run.

A redemptive depiction of Emperor Napoleon resting one hand on the Tablets of the Law given to Moses and extending his other hand to a woman on the ground, symbolising the synagogue he is about to restore. The text, entirely engraved in intaglio, concludes with the following sentence: ‘The gratitude of the French Israelites has not been confined to mere displays of thanks; every day they prove themselves worthy of the sovereign’s favour through their devotion to his august person and their submission to his laws.’
