Description
[EDICTS & MEMORANDUM]
A legal document from the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt. In this document, the city challenges the status granted to Jews and the number of Jewish residents permitted to live in the Judengasse. [1714].
4 quarto-sized folios in German.
(Water stains and wormholes in the margins).
A rare legal memorandum in which the bourgeoisie of Frankfurt am Main, in opposition to the city council and the Jewish community, challenge the protective status granted to the Jews by Emperor Matthias in 1616, which set a temporary limit of 500 Jewish households. In this memorandum, the burghers of Frankfurt argue that this limit was merely a temporary measure intended to restore calm following the riots, and not a permanent authorisation. They emphasise that the City Council had undertaken to reduce this number to 16 families and demand the immediate reduction in the number of Jewish families or the expulsion of the Jews, citing unfair commercial competition on their part.
