On 26 May 1926, on Rue Racine in Paris, Samuel Schwartzbard, an anarchist activist and Jewish refugee from Bessarabia, shot and killed Simon Petliura, a Ukrainian independence activist in exile, with seven bullets. He justified his act by claiming he wished to avenge his fellow Jews in Ukraine, who had been murdered during pogroms which, he claimed, had been instigated by Simon Petliura in 1919.
