In this letter addressed to the journalist Jules Huret, Émile Bergerat, art critic for the Journal Officiel and editor-in-chief of La Vie moderne, expresses his outrage regarding the 1899 Rennes trial: ‘Oh! What a disgrace, my friend, what a disgrace and what a pain it is to live in a time and in a country where such an atrocity as this Rennes trial is possible!’
