Description
[THE DREYFUS AFFAIR] I Accuse…! Letter to the President of the Republic Paris, L’Aurore, Thursday 13 January 1898. Unbound copy comprising (2) folios. First edition of Émile Zola’s famous manifesto addressed to the President of the Republic, Félix Faure. (Creases and minor losses). Also included: 4 further issues of *L’Aurore* signed by Zola, featuring a banner on the front page of the newspaper concerning the Dreyfus Affair: - Issue 178 of *L’Aurore*, dated Thursday 14 April 1898: ‘Response to the Summons’ by Émile Zola. (Creases and minor tears). - Issue 222 of *L’Aurore*, dated Saturday 28 May 1898: ‘My Father’ by Émile Zola. (Creases and minor tears). - Issue 271 of *L’Aurore*, dated Saturday 16 July 1898: *Letter to Mr Henri Brisson* by Émile Zola. (Creases and minor tears). - Issue 704 of *L’Aurore*, dated Friday 22 September 1899: *Letter to Madame Alfred Dreyfus* by Émile Zola. (Creases and minor tears). An exceptional collection of issues of *L’Aurore* devoting their front pages to the Dreyfus Affair. Whilst the best known of these is Zola’s ‘J’accuse’, this collection as a whole illustrates the impact of this affair, which dominated the newspaper’s front page for two years. Furthermore, and this is worth noting, ‘J’accuse’ is in good condition. Émile Zola rallied the Dreyfusards when Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy was acquitted. The significance of this letter, published in the daily newspaper *L’Aurore* and in which Zola calls upon Félix Faure as a witness, is immense. He accuses and denounces the conspiracy orchestrated by the army. His action gave rise to the figure of the ‘committed intellectual’. Although this bold move cost the writer two court cases and exile, it made the march towards justice inevitable. Dreyfus, finally exonerated in 1906, regained his honour and his honours, completing his military career with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
