Description
[THE DREYFUS AFFAIR]
I Accuse…! Letter to the President of the Republic.
Paris, L’Aurore, Thursday 13 January 1898. Unbound copy comprising (2) folios. First edition of Émile Zola’s famous manifesto addressed to the President of the Republic, Félix Faure. (Creases, missing pages, restorations, foxing).
Émile Zola joined the Dreyfusards when Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy was acquitted. The significance of this letter, published in the daily newspaper *L’Aurore* and in which Zola calls upon Félix Faure as a witness, is immense. He accuses and denounces the conspiracy orchestrated by the army. His action gave rise to the figure of the ‘committed intellectual’. Although this bold move cost the writer two court cases and exile, it made the march towards justice inevitable. Dreyfus, finally exonerated in 1906, regained his honour and his honours, completing his military career with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
