Description
[SECOND WORLD WAR – PHOTOGRAPH]
Arrest in the Warsaw Ghetto
Contretype photograph from the period, with a typewritten caption stuck to the back.
A group of prisoners, with a Jewish child in the foreground with his hands in the air. On the right, armed German soldiers are threatening him.
16.5 x 23 cm
This anonymous photograph was taken by a German soldier during the suppression of the Jewish uprising that took place in the Warsaw Ghetto from 19 April to 16 May 1943.
This photograph appears in an album of fifty-three photographs appended to the report that the SS officer in charge of operations, Jürgen Stroop, sent to his superiors, Krüger and Himmler.
This photograph would later (from the 1970s and 1980s onwards) become one of the most famous images of this period. Indeed, it remained confidential until the Nuremberg trials, when it was included in the case file as evidence for the prosecution.
