Description
[MIZRAH]
A chart indicating the direction of the East.
Alsace, Strasbourg, 1833.
The name of its creator, Michael Kuppenheim, and the date of creation, 1833, are engraved in Hebrew at the bottom of the plate.
(Stains, oxidation).
Not examined outside its frame.
This Mizrah design, a true archetype, is probably the source of numerous variants, apparently all printed in Alsace and other neighbouring regions of Germany, whose Jewish populations share very similar cultures. In the centre is a depiction of Jerusalem in the classical style, featuring Roman or Greek ruins. On either side stand the figures of King David and King Solomon. The figure of King David is taken from a biblical engraving by Matthaeus Merian from the 17th century. This Mizrah is unusual because of its very early date of production for this type of object, the artist’s signature and the Hebrew inscription on the plate, and the fact that it is engraved on copper rather than lithographed, unlike most known examples. It appears to be the source of inspiration for the Mizrahs that were printed in various versions later in the century. (William Gross)
An identical Mizrah is held in the William Gross Collection under inventory number: 056.011.017
