The Council for a Beautiful Israel is an organisation whose aim is to improve the quality of life in Israel by prioritising ecology, environmental protection and land-use planning. This Hanukkah lamp bears witness to Regine’s attachment to the State of Israel and its people.
Régine (1929–2022), to whom this Hanukkah lamp was given, was a woman whose life alone would have been enough to fill several books. Born in Belgium under the name Sylberberg, she was hidden at the start of the Second World War in a convent, then, following her father’s arrest, with the Heymann family. At the age of thirteen and a half, she fell in love with the young Claude Heymann, who died in deportation after being arrested by the Milice. After the liberation, she worked in her father’s café in Paris, then, from 1952, at the club ‘Le Whisky à Gogo’. She went on to open her own nightclubs. Having run 22 clubs around the world, she was soon nicknamed ‘the queen of the night’. But she did not confine herself to managing her many clubs and hotels; she also performed numerous songs composed by Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Dabadie, Serge Lama and Patrick Modiano, amongst others. She also appeared in a few films, published her memoirs, and founded and ran charitable organisations. Upon her death, President Macron and his wife paid tribute to “a leading figure of Parisian nightlife and French chanson”.
