Description
An ebonised wood veneered overmantel opening with a door decorated in its centre with a medallion of a bouquet of flowers, birds and a ribbon bow in polychrome hardstone. Richly adorned with gilded bronzes such as interlacing and a Bacchus mask in the belt, leafy consoles in the falls, mouldings in the frames and Allegories on the sides. Set in white marble top (crack), mahogany veneered interior with two shelves. NAPOLEON III period. Some damage to the hardstone decoration, small crack in the front, wear. - 117 x 91 x 43 cm. Attributed to Mathieu BEFORT Jeune (1813-1880) a Parisian cabinetmaker specialising in this type of work. To be compared with a pair of pieces of furniture stamped BEFORT Jeune, reproduced on page 49 in Mme LEDOUX-LEBARD's book "Le mobilier français du XIXème" Paris 1989. Sold in December 1982 at Sotheby's Monte Carlo. Provenance: House in Anjou
