Description
Journal des chasseurs. First year — Thirty-fourth year. 1836–1870. Paris, Journal des chasseurs, 1836–1870. 49 vols. in-8, contemporary binding in green half-shagreen, gilt lettering on the front covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs. A rare complete collection of the most important French hunting journal, edited by Léon Bertrand, which ceased publication following the war of 1870. It features the most celebrated hunting writers of the period. Illustrated with 392 lithographic plates (out of 417), some of which are enhanced and many printed in two colours. The number of plates varies between copies. A fine copy bearing the gilt initials ‘FG’ within a trumpet motif (undoubtedly the painter François Grenier, creator of numerous lithographs for the *Journal des chasseurs*) from the hunting libraries of H. Parent and P. Lebaudy, with their bookplates. Foxing. Spine very slightly faded. A tear to the upper cap of vol. 32. The binding of the final volume is different, in fawn half-basane, the spine decorated with gilt faux-nerves, with worn caps and partially split joints.
