Description
CHENU (J.-C.) The Hunter’s Guide to Birds. Natural history, behaviour and habits. Hunting birds of the plains, woods and marshes. Paris, Rothschild, 1870. 4to, contemporary half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, 168 pp., 49 plates (out of 50). First edition. One of the finest 19th-century hunting books devoted to game birds, containing 49 plates, fully engraved and finely watercoloured (not in chromolithography as the title suggests) out of 50: the frontispiece plate of the pheasant is missing. A comprehensive description of the species, their habits, their habitat, their distribution in France and their hunting, by a renowned hunter and ornithologist. A fine copy. The top of the title page has been trimmed and roughly lined. Expert: Mr Cédric De FOUGEROLLE
