London, Porter, 1892. Quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, gilt title, 284 pp. First edition of General D. Hamilton’s hunting memoirs from India and Indonesia; he was one of the most famous hunters in the Indian Army. Illustrated with a photographic portrait and numerous black-and-white illustrations. Not previously published in French. Good condition. Slight foxing, spines split, cardboard cover rubbed. - KINLOCH (A. A. A.). *Large Game Shooting in Tibet, the Himalayas, Northern & Central India*. Camden, Culler, 1995. In-4, publisher’s binding in blue calfskin, gilt decoration on the front cover, ribbed spine adorned with a gilt motif, gilt edges, slipcase. Reprint of the 1892 edition of the author’s hunting accounts—he was an officer in the Indian Army—organised by game species: yak, thar, goral, deer, tiger, bear, elephant, etc., illustrated with black-and-white plates. Preface by K. Czech. Never before published in French. This luxurious edition, printed in a run of 500 copies, is in perfect condition. Numbered copy (no. 279). - KNOWLES (G. London, Wright & Brown, 1932. 8vo, publisher’s cloth binding, 320 pp. First edition of these important accounts of hunting in the Indian jungle and the Himalayas: tigers hunted from the back of elephants, leopards, deer, etc. Numerous black-and-white photographs as inserts. Not previously published in French. A good copy. A few foxing spots. Minor, insignificant stains on the covers. - PHILLIPPS-WOLLEY (C.). Savage Svânetia. London, Bentley, 1883. 2 vols. in-12, publisher’s green percaline cloth binding, embossed decoration on the covers, 272 + 250 pp. First edition of this account of a hunting expedition to Svaneti, a high-mountain region of north-western Georgia, by a British diplomat posted to Kerch (Crimea). The text also includes numerous ethnographic details. Illustrated with woodcuts. Not previously published in French. Good condition. Handwritten ‘ex dono’ on the title pages. - SCHALLER (G. B.). *The Deer and the Tiger. A Study of Wildlife in India*. Chicago: University of Chicago, 1967. In-8, modern binding in marbled violet half-basane, ribbed spine, title label, covers, 370 pp. First edition. A remarkable scientific study of the ungulates of India (axis deer, marsh deer, sambar, cervicapre antelope, gaur) and the tiger: observation of populations, behaviour, reproduction, etc. The author worked primarily in Kanha National Park (central India), one of the tiger sanctuaries. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, maps and tables. Not previously published in French. A fine copy. - SMYTHIES (E. A.). Big Game Shooting in Nepal (with Leaves from the Maharaja’s Sporting Diary). Calcutta, Thacker & Spink, 1942. In-4, publisher’s green percaline cloth binding, 174 pp. Rare. Hunting in Nepal with extracts from the hunting diary of the Maharaja of Nepal in 1933: tigers, rhinoceroses, etc. Illustrated with 43 plates in black and colour and a folded colour map.
