Description
LIGIER (L.). *Le ménage universel de la ville et des champs* or *Le jardinier françois accommodés au gout du tems*… Paris, David, 1737. 12mo, contemporary sheepskin, 448 pp.
A highly practical manual for country life, compiled by the Abbé de la Ferrière from the works of Louis Ligier (1658–1717), which were themselves published based on successive editions of the works of Nicolas de Bonnefons, gardener and valet to Louis XIV, which appeared from 1651 onwards.
The author discusses gardening, hunting, falconry and fishing.
Binding worn and poorly repaired.
Included by the same author:
Amusements of the Countryside or New Innocent Tricks, which teach how to trap all manner of birds and four-legged beasts; with the finest secrets of fishing in rivers and ponds and a general treatise on all forms of hunting. Paris, Savoye, 1753. 2 volumes in-12, fawn half-basane with rear corners, spines decorated with gilt faux-ribbing, 562 & 512 pp.
The latest edition, ‘even more enjoyable than the previous one’ and the most comprehensive, is lavishly illustrated with 116 woodcuts within the text detailing the numerous trapping and fishing techniques.
Liger organises his work into five books, dealing in turn with sedentary birds, migratory birds, the art of net-making, and then the hunting of hares, wolves, rabbits, wild boar, deer, etc. The final book is devoted to fishing.
The work, largely inspired by Fortin’s famous *Ruses innocentes*, was first published in 1709. Liger’s contribution relates chiefly to hunting with hounds and the extensive glossary of ‘terms relating to hunting, hunting with hounds, falconry and fishing’, running to nearly 100 pages.
The title page of the first volume is missing. Bindings are worn; the volume number labels are missing; the title labels are damaged.
