Description
Large copper basin with engraved decoration, Iran, dated 1112 H / 1700
A substantial basin with flared rim, made of copper and featuring engraved decoration. The body is punctuated by four-lobed medallions with fleur-de-lis-adorned appendages, each depicting an animal or a battle between animals against a background of palmette scrollwork; beneath the rim runs a broad calligraphic frieze flanked by plant motifs. The inscription, in Persian Nasta’liq script, forms a Shi’ite prayer and stands out against a floral background. A medallion with a floral finial indicates the owner’s name, Muhammad Bâqir, and the date 1112 H / 1700 is engraved beside it. Another medallion, engraved at a later date on the body, bears the name Nasir [?].
