Description
Set of seven hammam towels and sash belts, Ottoman Empire, Turkey and Greece, late 19th – early 20th century Woven from unbleached cotton or linen, embroidered at both ends with multicoloured silk threads and metallic strips or threads. The motifs consist, respectively, of vine leaves, three bouquets of flowers in vases, four roses enveloped by a serrated saz leaf, two compositions featuring stylised vases of flowers populated by birds, a stylised floral arrangement punctuated by four bright pink rosettes, four large flowers framed by geometric friezes, and two bright pink flowers emerging from a vase. Of the seven pieces, one large piece is sewn together from two panels and edged with fringes trimmed with turquoise beads, whilst another of the same type is fragmentary. Dimensions: 196.5 x 23 cm, 89.5 x 46 cm, 101 x 52 cm, 167 x 45 cm, 182 x 38 cm, 175 x 89 cm, 87.5 x 47 cm A few stains and water marks, minor imperfections and signs of wear on some; a felt-tip pen inscription ‘Gülsen’ [?] on one piece; one fragmentary piece. Four small crocheted bags are included.
