Polychrome majolica bowl decorated with an istoriato scene depicting the story of Pyramus and Thisbe (Ovid, *Metamorphoses*, 4, 43–166). Inscription on the reverse: ‘pirimo e tibise’. Urbino, mid-16th century Diameter: 27 cm. On the reverse, an old but later inscription in brown ink, partially effaced … nel primo delle … Tusculine (?) (foot missing, small chips on the rim) Several episodes from the legend of Pyramus and Thisbe are depicted: the two young Babylonian lovers, separated by their families, arrange to meet beneath a white mulberry tree; Thisbe arrives first, but, frightened by a lioness, she flees, dropping her veil; when Pyramus arrives and discovers the bloodstained veil, he believes Thisbe to be dead and takes his own life; on her return, Thisbe finds her beloved dying and kills herself in turn.
