Jean-François FAVRE (Geneva, 1751–1807), enamel painter, and Jean-Jacques CAFFIERI (1725–1792), the King’s bronze-smith. An oval miniature portrait on ivory of a gentleman in a three-quarter view to the right, wearing a red coat and black cravat. Set in a large chiselled gilt-bronze frame in the Rococo style, decorated with garlands of roses surmounted by a ribbon bow; at the top, a plaque inscribed ‘I.I. Caffieri / Sculpteur du Roy’. On the reverse, a riveted gilt-bronze label bearing the inscription ‘Painted by J. F. Favre / of Geneva in 1778’. 18th century, circa 1778. H. 4 x W. 3.5 cm (miniature). H. 11.5 x W. 8 cm (frame). With its CIC no. FR2506900311-K (2025) History: A pupil of the Genevan painters Jacques Saint-Ours and Marc-Théodore Bourrit, Favre continued his training in Paris in the studio of Charles-Louis Loehr. Primarily known for his enamel paintings, he also worked on ivory and paper. On his return to Switzerland, he produced pieces notably for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Some of his works are held in major museum collections, including two miniatures at the Louvre from the former David-Weill collection (inv. RF 30888 and RF 30887). Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725–1792) came from a family of sculptors and bronze casters of Italian origin, who had been settled in Paris since the beginning of Louis XIV’s reign. The son of Philippe Caffieri (1678–1755), himself a sculptor and bronze caster to the King, who enjoyed the privilege of gilding his own works in his own workshop, Jean-Jacques is primarily recognised for his sculptural work, comprising numerous portraits of illustrious men. However, he continued his father’s work as a bronze caster, as did his brother Philippe (1714–1774): as evidenced in particular by a pair of sconces attributed to him, now in the collection of the Palace of Versailles (inv.
