Description
HEAD OF A MILITARY SAINT, PROBABLY SAINT GEORGE Southern Germany or the Upper Rhine, c. 1500 (late 15th – early 16th century) Fragment of a carved and polychromed wooden sculpture depicting the head of a helmeted military saint, probably Saint George. The elongated face, with ascetic features, is framed by a short beard and crowned with a helmet bearing stylised painted decoration. Traces of original polychromy remain. Mounted on a circular wooden plinth added at a later date. H: 23.5 cm; total height: 26 cm (Signs of wear, gaps, significant damage and woodworm damage, fragmentary polychromy, modern plinth.) Provenance: private collection in eastern France Note: this work can be compared with late Gothic sculptures from Swabia or the Rhineland dating from around 1500.
