Description
ALMANACH ROYAL. Paris: Le Breton, 1776. In-24, (68) ff. in irregular quires, signed a7, b-c8, d5, e-i4, k3, l-n4, o2, p3, garnet morocco, spine ribbed with partitions and fleur-de-lys, boards decorated with a gilt framed plate with central medallion with coat of arms painted under mica surrounded by a mosaic decoration with gilt motifs, decorated edges, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges, blue tabis endpapers; lower head and corners restored (contemporary binding). Pocket-sized abridgement of the Royal Almanac, presenting the main personalities of the Court, the army, the royal administration and the clergy (Grand-Carteret, no. 127). BONDED WITH THE PAINTED ARMS OF THE AMFREVILLE FAMILY, probably for André-Michel-Alexandre Poërier, comte d'Amfreville, marquis d'Auberville-La-Manuel. Born into a family of Norman parliamentarians, he was captain of the king's ships and mayor of Rouen from 1770 until his death in 1779. However, because of his stance against Chancellor Maupeou's reform of the Parliaments, he was summoned to Versailles in 1772 and exiled to Haguenau until 1779, shortly before his death.
