[BRILLON (Pierre-Jacques). Portraits sérieux, galands et critiques. À Paris, chez Michel Brunet, 1696. In-12, (10 of which 2nd blank)-363-(9) pp, garnet-red morocco, spine ribbed, partitioned and decorated, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, filleted edges, gilt inner frieze, gilt edges (H. de Courmont rel.). FIRST EDITION. The serious portraits include moral paintings of particular personalities such as Louis XIV, or of human types: the virtuous prince, the character of the French nation, the honest man; the gallant and critical portraits are keyed. CONTINUER AND DEFENDER OF LA BRUYERE, PIERRE-JACQUES BRILLON (1671-1736) was a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris and served as intendant to the House of the Duc du Maine, the legitimate son of Louis XIV. He published a treatise on jurisprudence and various works of literature, including Ouvrage nouveau dans le goût des Caractères de Théophraste (1697, later republished as Le Théophraste moderne), and Apologie de monsieur de La Bruyère (1701). Provenance: Achille Künholtz-Lordat (1820-1893, copper-engraved armorial bookplate).
