Description
DUMESNIL (Alexis). Histoire de Don Juan d'Autriche. Paris, Ambroise Dupont et Cie, 1827. In-8, viii-205-(one blank) pp. half-garnet brown morocco, spine ribbed with compartments decorated with gilt cross-stripes; some foxing (Brigandat).
FIRST EDITION.
A BRILLIANT HALF-FREREW OF PHILIPPE II OF SPAIN, DON JUAN OF AUSTRIA (1545-1578) was a natural son of Charles V. He was one of the great captains of France. He was one of the great captains of his time, victorious at Granada against the rebellious Moors (1570), at Lepanto against the Turks (1571), at Tunis against the Barbary pirates (1573) and at Gembloux against the troops of the insurgent Netherlands (1578). His ambition was to wear the crown, which he never achieved, and he died prematurely, possibly poisoned.
A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE VOGUE OF "SPANISHOLISM" that came into vogue following the Spanish Expedition of 1823, a vogue also indulged by Prosper Mérimée (Théâtre de Clara Gazul, 1825) and Victor Hugo (Hernani, 1830). The latter had already collaborated in 1823 on the publication of the Memoirs of his father, General Léopold Hugo, who had served in Spain during the Empire.
LITERATOR AND ADVERTISER, ALEXIS DUMESNIL (1783-1858) published history books and, above all, political and religious essays and libels. An "evangelical socialist", he was very active in the press, called for the community of goods, tirelessly opposed corruption and was imprisoned for it.
A FINE COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY SIGNED BINDING.
Provenance, the banker and industrialist Alfred Renouard de Bussière (1804-1887, copper-engraved armorial bookplate).
