Description
VERGNIAUD (Pierre Victurnien). Autograph letter signed to his brother-in-law François Alluaud. Bordeaux, 7 February 1784. One p. 1/2 in-8. " ... The winter, without being very harsh in Bordeaux, has so frozen the zeal of Messrs du Parlement that the hearings start after 11 a.m. and finish at noon. Also the prosecutors do not distribute the cases, and the young lawyers who do not have cooked bread begin to find the time a little long. They are the ones who show the most zeal to ensure that justice is properly administered. I hope that this session I will work at the seneschal where I have not yet pleaded. I will be indebted to the father of Verthamon who would, I believe, if he could, recommend me to the whole world. I am all the more obliged to him because he is not ungrateful for my attachment to Mr Dupaty and he never speaks ill of me...". François Alluaud ran the royal porcelain factory in Limoges from 1788 to 1793 and became mayor of the town in 1792. After successfully practising as a lawyer in the Bordeaux parliament, Pierre-Victurnien Vergniaud (1753-1793) was one of the leading members of the Legislative Assembly and the Convention, both of which he chaired, and where he stood out for his oratorical skills. It was he who announced the deposition of Louis XVI in August 1792 and his death sentence in January 1793. He himself suffered the same fate as the Girondins, and was guillotined on 31 October 1793. Little given to writing letters, he left very few documents of his own.
