Vintage engraving with margin

70 x 92 cm with frame
B.E (slight folds and very slight brown spots)
The composition depicts the amphitheatre built for the sumptuous equestrian festivities organised in Paris to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin. The five richly costumed quadrilles (Romans, Persians, Turks, Indians and Savages) appear in the arena before the head races and ring games. Louis XIV appears at the head of the Roman quadrille, in a setting inspired by ancient imperial triumphs.
A masterpiece of the official iconography of the reign, this plate is a major testimony to the art of festivities under the Sun King. The large prints of the Carrousel of 1662 engraved by Israël Silvestre are among the most ambitious productions of French printmaking of the XVIIᵉ century.
Copies of this engraving are now held in the collections of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris and in the Department of Graphic Arts at the Musée du Louvre.
