Description
HEROES OF THE VENDEE WAR Jean-Nicolas Stofflet (1753-1796) and Antoine-Philippe de La Trémoille (1765-1794), Prince of Talmont Set of two framed lithographs Early 19th century print 54 x 37.5 and 57 x 41 cm with frame One wet, yellowing Stamp "Au profit des vendéens". Jean-Nicolas Stofflet (1753-1796) was one of the main military leaders of the Vendée insurrection during the French Revolution. Of Alsatian origin and a former gamekeeper to the Count of Colbert-Maulévrier, he distinguished himself by his organisational skills and his authority in dealing with the Catholic and royal armies. After the death of François Athanase Charette de La Contrie and several other Vendéen leaders, Stofflet continued the royalist struggle before being captured and shot in Angers in 1796. Antoine-Philippe de La Trémoille (1765-1794), Prince of Talmont and the last representative of the La Trémoille-Laval branch, embraced the monarchist cause very early on during the Revolution. A cavalry officer with close ties to counter-revolutionary circles, he joined the Catholic and Royal Army and took part in the main Vendée campaigns. Captured after the Virée de Galerne, he was guillotined in Laval in 1794, becoming one of the most emblematic aristocratic figures of the royalist cause.
