This rare portrait of Diane de France is one of three known portraits painted by François Clouet and his studio. Probably painted in Clouet's close circle, our painting shows notable differences in costume from the other versions. Diane de France is depicted in a more sober, almost more intimate manner. She is, however, wearing important jewels that recall her rank.
Diane de France was the daughter of Filippa Duci and the Dauphin, the future Henry II. Legitimised by her father in 1548, she was raised by the royal favourite Diane de Poitiers. She retained great influence throughout her life with the various sovereigns. She died without issue after the premature deaths of her two children.
